History

Bayview Fairways was originally built in 1971, with the official opening on November 8, 1972. Consisting of a cluster of hexagons and flat surfaces, it was viewed as a landmark in the community and ahead of its time. In a move from the more traditional classroom, the third level boasted an open space concept. Here, 175 to 185 children and their teachers would be working co-operatively. Enrolment in September consisted of 423 children ranging from Kindergarten to Grade Five.

The following year, Grade 6 was offered, nine portables were added and the enrolment reached 655 students. With this increase, an addition was constructed to hold the new intermediate division. As new schools opened, enrollment fell to 265. Enrolment continued to grow again to around 600 students in 1995. Major renovations were made to the school in 2002 (upstairs floor and Grade 1 room), to close in classrooms. In 2002 students from Henderson Public School were housed at Bayview Fairways due to a fire at that facility. In 2004 the school underwent a beautification of the foyer with the addition of hand crafted tiles by students, staff and community members. Major renovations were done in the summer of 2010, to meet the Accessibility Act. The current enrolment in the 2010-2011 school year is 280 students.

On the Grade 8 trip to Ottawa in 1983, the students were thrilled to meet Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, in person. Among the famous people who taught at our school was Dr. Zed from Owl Magazine. Gordon Korman a famous author attended this school in 1975.

Our school motto is “To live is to learn, to learn is to live…reach for the stars!”

Our school mascot is the cougar.
